BUILDING A UNITED FRONT FOR CLIMATE ACTION IN NIGERIA

Strengthening Partnerships Among Government, Scientists, Journalists, Civil Society Organisations and Citizens to Secure a Sustainable Future

By Comrade AbdulHakeem Mutiu Adejumo-Ajeseku, Abuja-Nigeria

BTvNEWS: Nigeria stands at a critical crossroads in its climate journey. From devastating floods that displace communities to prolonged droughts affecting agricultural productivity and livelihoods, the realities of climate change are becoming increasingly evident across the country. These environmental challenges are no longer distant threats; they are immediate concerns demanding coordinated, inclusive and sustained action from all segments of society.

Addressing the climate crisis requires more than policy declarations and international commitments. It calls for strategic collaboration among government institutions, state actors, climate journalists, scientists, civil society organisations, non-governmental organisations and ordinary citizens. Each stakeholder possesses unique expertise, influence and resources that can contribute significantly towards building climate resilience and promoting sustainable development in Nigeria.

The Federal and State Governments must demonstrate stronger political will by prioritising climate action within national and sub-national development agendas. Adequate budgetary allocations should be dedicated to climate adaptation, renewable energy initiatives, afforestation programmes and disaster risk reduction mechanisms. Policymakers must also ensure that existing environmental laws are effectively implemented and strengthened where necessary to address emerging climate realities.

State actors, including legislators, traditional institutions and public agencies, have an equally important responsibility to facilitate community-based climate interventions. By promoting inclusive decision-making processes and supporting locally driven environmental initiatives, these actors can bridge the gap between policy formulation and grassroots implementation. Communities most affected by climate-related disasters should be actively involved in developing solutions tailored to their unique circumstances.

Climate journalists occupy a strategic position in shaping public understanding and influencing policy discourse. Beyond reporting environmental disasters, the media must consistently highlight climate innovations, investigate environmental violations and amplify the voices of vulnerable populations. Through responsible and evidence-based reporting, journalists can inspire behavioural change, promote accountability and encourage broader public participation in climate action.

Scientists and researchers remain indispensable in providing the empirical evidence necessary for effective climate governance. Their work should extend beyond academic institutions into public spaces where scientific findings can inform government policies, media narratives and community interventions. Strengthening partnerships between researchers and policymakers will ensure that climate responses are guided by credible data and best practices.

Civil society organisations and non-governmental organisations have long played a vital role in advocacy, awareness creation and community mobilisation. Their efforts in environmental education, policy engagement and capacity building should be further supported through increased collaboration with government agencies and development partners. Such partnerships can expand the reach and impact of climate programmes across urban and rural communities alike.

The private sector must also recognise that climate responsibility aligns with long-term economic sustainability. Businesses should adopt environmentally responsible practices, invest in green technologies and support initiatives that promote environmental stewardship. Corporate institutions possess the capacity to drive innovation and contribute significantly to Nigeria’s transition towards a low-carbon economy.

Individual Nigerians cannot afford to remain passive observers in the climate conversation. Everyday actions such as proper waste management, tree planting, energy conservation and environmental advocacy collectively contribute to broader climate goals. Citizens must also demand greater accountability from leaders and institutions responsible for environmental governance. Climate action is not solely the duty of governments and organisations; it is a shared civic responsibility.

As Nigeria continues to navigate the complexities of climate change, collaboration must become the cornerstone of national response efforts. Fragmented approaches and isolated interventions will yield limited results against a challenge of this magnitude. A unified framework that encourages partnerships, knowledge exchange and collective action offers the most promising pathway towards resilience and sustainability.

The time for hesitation has passed. The climate emergency requires bold leadership, informed journalism, scientific innovation, active civil society engagement and responsible citizenship. By exploring and strengthening collaborative opportunities for climate action, Nigeria can protect its people, preserve its natural resources and secure a more sustainable future for generations yet unborn. The responsibility belongs to all of us, and the moment to act is now.
