BTvNEWS: As climate change continues to affect livelihoods, food security, environmental sustainability and community resilience, the role of responsible journalism in informing the public and promoting meaningful climate action has become increasingly important.
BTV Online TV, Radio and Publication: Climate and Peacebuilding Reporters (BTV-CPR) is strengthening its commitment to climate and environmental journalism by using television, radio, publication and digital platforms to raise public awareness, investigate environmental concerns, amplify community voices and promote practical solutions.
Through its climate, environmental, investigative and peacebuilding reporting, BTV-CPR seeks to bridge the communication gap between scientists, policymakers, environmental organisations and ordinary citizens by translating complex climate issues into accessible and relevant public information.
Speaking on the platform’s climate-action journalism, Comrade AbdulHakeem Mutiu Adejumo-Ajeseku, CEO, Head of Communication, Research and Strategies, and Lead Investigative Journalist at BTV-CPR, said:
“Climate action cannot succeed when the people are not adequately informed about the challenges and the solutions available to them. Journalism therefore has a responsibility to bring climate science, environmental policies and community experiences closer to the people.”
He added:
“At BTV-CPR, we are not interested in merely reporting environmental problems. We want to investigate issues, amplify credible voices, promote responsible dialogue and communicate practical solutions that can strengthen climate resilience and environmental sustainability.”
According to him, effective climate journalism must also give communities the opportunity to tell their stories and participate in conversations about the environmental challenges affecting their livelihoods.
“The media can serve as a bridge between science and society, policymakers and citizens, and institutions and communities. When accurate information is properly communicated, awareness can translate into responsible action,” he said.
BTV-CPR also recognises the growing challenge of climate misinformation and the importance of fact-based reporting. Its editorial approach emphasises credible sourcing, verification, responsible communication and clear distinction between established facts, expert analysis, allegations and opinions.
The organisation further seeks to promote solutions-oriented journalism by highlighting climate-resilient agriculture, renewable energy, waste management, ecosystem restoration, environmental conservation, youth participation and community-led initiatives capable of contributing to sustainable development.
Beyond environmental reporting, BTV-CPR’s climate and peacebuilding focus recognises the connections between environmental pressures, livelihoods, natural resources, community relations and peaceful coexistence.
As Nigeria continues to strengthen climate awareness and implementation, BTV-CPR remains committed to using the power of journalism to inform minds, inspire responsible action, amplify community voices and contribute to a more climate-resilient, environmentally sustainable and peaceful Nigeria.
