Singer Fails to Meet Stringent Bail Conditions…
BtvNEWS: Controversial Nigerian singer, Habeeb Okikiola Badmus, popularly known as Portable, has been remanded in the Oke Kura Correctional Centre in Ilorin, Kwara State capital.
This follows his inability to meet the stringent bail conditions imposed by an Upper Area Court.
Portable was granted bail in the sum of N1 million with two sureties in like sum. However, the conditions proved challenging for him to fulfill.
One surety must be either the Chairman or Secretary of the Performing Musicians Association of Nigeria, while the other must be a property owner within a Government Reserved Area in Ilorin with a valid Certificate of Occupancy.
The charges against Portable stem from a petition filed by veteran Fuji musician, Okunola Saheed, aka Saheed Osupa. Osupa alleged that Portable defamed him during a live Instagram broadcast on March 19, 2025.
In the video, Portable made disparaging remarks about Osupa, claiming he was envious of his success and attempting to destroy his reputation.
Osupa maintained that Portable’s remarks were not only defamatory but also intended to incite public hatred and disturb the peace.
The police, acting on the petition, launched an investigation and secured a valid arrest warrant from a Magistrate Court sitting in Ilorin.
Arrest and Investigation:
On Sunday, April 13, 2025, operatives from the Kwara State Police Command apprehended Portable in Abeokuta, Ogun State, at about 7:25 p.m. He was subsequently transferred to Ilorin for further investigation.
Upon his arrival, Portable’s statement was taken in the presence of legal representatives from both parties.
Charges and Bail Conditions:
The case is documented under First Information Report (FIR) 117(1) CPC. Portable faces several serious offenses, including.
Criminal Defamation: Under Section 392 of the Penal Code
Criminal Intimidation: Section 397
Inciting Disturbance: Section 114
Conduct Likely to Cause a Breach of Public Peace
Use of Abusive and Offensive Language
The Investigating Police Officer, ASP Adeniyi James, confirmed that Portable was charged based on a directive from the police authorities.
Background to the Dispute:
The dispute between Portable and Osupa also touches on copyright issues. Osupa’s management, Digital Music Commerce and Exchange Ltd. (DMCE), reported one of Portable’s tracks, “Fuji Shakushaku,” for copyright infringement.
The song was subsequently taken down from Apple Music and other streaming platforms.
Portable criticized Osupa in a series of videos, referring to him as “big for nothing.” He later apologized publicly, attributing his outburst to frustration over the song’s removal and resulting financial losses.
Previous Legal Issues:
This is not Portable’s first legal encounter. In 2023, he was charged with assault and theft in Ogun State. In 2024, he was arrested in Lagos for a debt dispute with a car dealer.
In February 2025, Portable and his team were accused of attacking government officials who came to enforce regulations at his bar in Ogun State.
The case has been adjourned to April 30, 2025, with the presiding magistrate advising all parties to maintain decorum as the case proceeds.
Portable remains in custody at the Oke Kura Correctional Centre in Ilorin, unable to meet the stringent bail requirements.
