BTvNEWS: As the Harmattan season and cold weather set in, experts are sounding the alarm on the increased risk of fires and accidents associated with the use of electrical appliances, gas, and charcoal. The harsh weather conditions, characterized by dry air and low temperatures, create a perfect storm for disasters to occur.
According to statistics, the majority of fires and accidents during the Harmattan and cold seasons are caused by human error, neglect, or lack of awareness. Electrical appliances, gas, and charcoal are particularly hazardous during this period, as they can ignite dry leaves, debris, and other flammable materials.
In light of these risks, experts are urging individuals, industries, communities, and the government to take proactive measures to prevent disasters.
“It’s crucial that we take the necessary precautions to ensure our safety and the safety of those around us,” said Pro. AbdulWaheed Abayomi, a leading expert in environmental safety. He added: “By working together, we can prevent avoidable tragedies and protect our communities.”
To mitigate the risks associated with the use of electrical appliances, gas, and charcoal during the Harmattan and cold seasons, the following precautions are recommended:
- Regularly inspect electrical appliances: Ensure that all electrical appliances are in good working condition, and that cords and wires are not damaged or frayed.
- Use gas and charcoal safely: Always follow the manufacturer’s instructions when using gas and charcoal, and ensure that they are used in well-ventilated areas.
- Keep flammable materials away: Keep dry leaves, debris, and other flammable materials away from electrical appliances, gas, and charcoal.
- Have a fire extinguisher nearby: Ensure that a fire extinguisher is easily accessible in case of an emergency.
- Stay informed: Stay up-to-date with weather forecasts and warnings, and follow safety guidelines issued by local authorities.
In addition to these precautions, experts are calling on the government to take a more proactive role in promoting public safety during the Harmattan and cold seasons.
“The government must take responsibility for ensuring that the public is aware of the risks associated with the use of electrical appliances, gas, and charcoal during this period,” said Dr. Haruna Abubakar.
“Public awareness campaigns, safety inspections, and emergency response planning are all critical components of a comprehensive safety strategy,” he further emphasized.
As the Harmattan and cold seasons set in, it’s imperative that we take collective action to prevent disasters. By working together, we can ensure a safe and healthy environment for all.
